    Immunocytochemical Localisation of Phospholipid Hydroperoxide Glutathione Peroxidase in Bull's Spermatogenic Cells

    Phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PHGPx) is a selenoprotein, which protects biomembranes from oxidative damages, and it also accounts for almost the entire selenium content of mammalian testis. The present investigation was performed to localise PHGPx in the testis and in epididymal and ejaculated spermatozoa of the bull by using light and electron immunomicroscopy. The study also aimed to further clarify the possible functions of the protein in bull fertility. In the testis, spermatogenic cells of the adluminal tubular compartment showed cytoplasmatic immunostaining; whereas, in the epididymal and ejaculated spermatozoa immunostaining was specifically localised at the level of the head and mid-piece. Ultrastructural data revealed the presence of signals for PHGPx in different subcellular compartments of maturing and mature sperm (mitochondria, chromatin, nuclear envelope, acrosomes, cytoskeletal structures) suggesting that this enzyme plays versatile and important biological roles during spermatogenesis. The final localisation of the immunostaining at acrosomal level puts forward a new role of the protein which further emphasises its relevance in male reproduction: it is reported to anchor substrate of the sperm acrosome to the oocyte zona pellucida during the fertilisation process

    Surface Characterization of AZ31 Alloy after Long-Term Immersion in Simulated Body Fluid

    The aim of the research campaign was to simulate in vitro the typical conditions for the corrosion in biofluid of a femoral bone implant manufactured with AZ31 alloy. The samples were immersed in biofluid (alpha-MEM) for time intervals of up to 56 days. For each immersion time, the chemical compositions and morphologies of the samples were studied with SEM, EDX, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS. The weight losses of the samples caused by corrosion were also measured. The results highlighted the formation of calcium phosphate crystals on the surface of the samples. This type of coating is well-known for its excellent corrosion resistance and for its ability to accelerate tissue regeneration. The deceleration of the corrosion process, observed after 28 days of immersion in biofluid, confirms the anti-corrosive effect of the coating that was spontaneously formed during the immersion tests

    Bifunctional Phase Transfer Catalysis in the Asymmetric Synthesis of Biologically Active Isoindolinones

    New bifunctional chiral ammonium salts were investigated in an asymmetric cascade synthesis of a key building block for a variety of biologically relevant isoindolinones. With this chiral compound in hand, the development of further transformations allowed for the synthesis of diverse derivatives of high pharmaceutical value, such as the Belliotti (S)-PD172938 and arylated analogues with hypnotic sedative activity, obtained in good overall total yield (50%) and high enantiomeric purity (95% ee). The synthetic routes developed herein are particularly convenient in comparison with the current methods available in literature and are particularly promising for large scale applications

    New insights into the oenological significance of Candida zemplinina. Impact of selected autochthonous strains on the volatile profile of Apulian wines

    In this investigation, we explored the oenological significance of Candida zemplinina (syn. Starmerella bacillaris) isolates from Apulian grape musts. Moreover, we provide the first evidence of the impact of different C. zemplinina strains on the wine aromatic properties tested as monocultures. We described the diversity of C. zemplinina strains isolated from grapes and the variability of ‘volatile’ phenotypes associated with this intraspecific variability. Thirty-three isolates were characterized at strain level by PCR-based approach and, among these, 16 strains were identified and then tested by microfermentation tests carried out in grape must. Analyzed strains were low producers of acetic acid and hydrogen sulphide, not able to decarboxylate a panel of representative amino acids, whereas they showed fructophilic character and significant glycerol production. Volatile profiles of produced wines were investigated by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The Odor Activity Values of all molecules were calculated and 12 compounds showed values above their odor thresholds. Two selected strains (35NC1 and 15PR1) could be considered as possible starter cultures since they were able to positively affect the sensory properties of obtained wine.     RISC-V-Based Platforms for HPC: Analyzing Non-functional Properties for Future HPC and Big-Data Clusters

    High-Performance Computing (HPC) have evolved to be used to perform simulations of systems where physical experimentation is prohibitively impractical, expensive, or dangerous. This paper provides a general overview and showcases the analysis of non-functional properties in RISC-V-based platforms for HPCs. In particular, our analyses target the evaluation of power and energy control, thermal management, and reliability assessment of promising systems, structures, and technologies devised for current and future generation of HPC machines. The main set of design methodologies and technologies developed within the activities of the Future and HPC & Big Data spoke of the National Centre of HPC, Big Data and Quantum Computing project are described along with the description of the testbed for experimenting two-phase cooling approaches

    Antiretroviral (ARV) Therapy in Resource Poor Countries: What do we Need in Real Life?

    Significant progresses have been made in the last 5 years towards the ultimate goal to provide universal access to care for all HIV/AIDS patients needing antiretroviral treatment in resource-poor countries. However, many barriers are still to be overcome, including (●) cost of care for the individual, (●) stigma, (●) lack of qualified human resources and infrastructure, especially in the rural setting, (●) rescue drugs for failing patients and (●) pediatric formulations. Priority actions to be promoted if the fight against HIV/AIDS is to be successful include: (i) promoting access to care in the rural areas, (ii) strengthening of basic health infrastructures, (iii) waiving of users’ fee to get ARV, (iv) a larger variety of drugs, with particular regard to fixed dose combination third line drugs and pediatric formulations, (v) local quality training and (vi) high quality basic and translational research. While the universal access to HIV care is crucial in developing countries, a strong emphasis on prevention should be maintained along

    The SURPRISE demonstrator: a super-resolved compressive instrument in the visible and medium infrared for Earth Observation

    While Earth Observation (EO) data has become ever more vital to understanding the planet and addressing societal challenges, applications are still limited by revisit time and spatial resolution. Though low Earth orbit missions can achieve resolutions better than 100 m, their revisit time typically stands at several days, limiting capacity to monitor dynamic events. Geostationary (GEO) missions instead typically provide data on an hour-basis but with spatial resolution limited to 1 km, which is insufficient to understand local phenomena. In this paper, we present the SURPRISE project - recently funded in the frame of the H2020 programme – that gathers the expertise from eight partners across Europe to implement a demonstrator of a super-spectral EO payload - working in the visible (VIS) - Near Infrared (NIR) and in the Medium InfraRed (MIR) and conceived to operate from GEO platform -with enhanced performance in terms of at-ground spatial resolution, and featuring innovative on-board data processing and encryption functionalities. This goal will be achieved by using Compressive Sensing (CS) technology implemented via Spatial Light Modulators (SLM). SLM-based CS technology will be used to devise a super-resolution configuration that will be exploited to increase the at-ground spatial resolution of the payload, without increasing the number of detector’s sensing elements at the image plane. The CS approach will offer further advantages for handling large amounts of data, as is the case of superspectral payloads with wide spectral and spatial coverage. It will enable fast on-board processing of acquired data for information extraction, as well as native data encryption on top of native compression. SURPRISE develops two disruptive technologies: Compressive Sensing (CS) and Spatial Light Modulator (SLM). CS optimises data acquisition (e.g. reduced storage and transmission bandwidth requirements) and enables novel onboard processing and encryption functionalities. SLM here implements the CS paradigm and achieves a super-resolution architecture. SLM technology, at the core of the CS architecture, is addressed by: reworking and testing off-the-shelf parts in relevant environment; developing roadmap for a European SLM, micromirror array-type, with electronics suitable for space qualification. By introducing for the first time the concept of a payload with medium spatial resolution (few hundreds of meters) and near continuous revisit (hourly), SURPRISE can lead to a EO major breakthrough and complement existing operational services. CS will address the challenge of large data collection, whilst onboard processing will improve timeliness, shortening time needed to extract information from images and possibly generate alarms. Impact is relevant to industrial competitiveness, with potential for market penetration of the demonstrator and its components

    Come sempre più frequentemente sottolineato e come dimostrano anche i contributi raccolti in questo volume, l’identità culturale dell’area latina viene emergendo, lentamente ma in modo deciso, in alcuni ambiti specifici: nel ruolo svolto dal mito nella costruzione identitaria delle singole città e del nomen nel suo insieme; nella specificità dei culti e delle pratiche religiose; nelle caratteristiche del rituale funerario; nelle diverse espressioni materiali e immateriali della cultura urbana. Nel complesso, il necessario superamento di quella visione storiografica consolidata che faceva del Lazio la “regione di Roma” ed il tentativo di restituire al nomen Latinum, componente centralissima del panorama etnico-culturale italico, una identità storica più consona all’effettivo ruolo svolto nella costruzione culturale e politica dell’Italia roman
